Catchpenny Cottage

Popular with honeymoon couples and families alike, Catchpenny Cottage is over 800 square feet - very spacious and private!

Once the carriage house of the Manning Estate, Catchpenny Cottage is filled with memorabilia from the horse-and-buggy days. On the National Historic Register, this unique 2 story structure is now part of the guest accommodations offered at Chinaberry Hill.

Recently renovated into 2 upscale private guest suites, the rooms can be rented separately (see Carriage Suite and Hayloft descriptions below) or combined into a group/family vacation rental. The combined suites can acommodate 6-7 guests (2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, large walk-in closet, private Jacuzzi). Both suites have cable TV/VCR - there is a complimentary video library in the main guest area of the inn.

Just 10 steps from the inn, cottage guests enjoy the best of both worlds -- total privacy, and 24 hour access to the entire downstairs of the inn (2 parlors, guest kitchen, dining room, fireplaces and wraparound porch).

The guest kitchen is kept well-stocked with complimentary juices, bottled water, sodas, cookies, popcorn and teas - great for those midnight raids!

Lots of greenery - hollyhocks, ferns and tall spires of foxglove greet cottage guests. Close to downtown and waterfront happenings, yet providing the solitude and intimacy of a garden setting, Catchpenny Cottage is the perfect Pacific Northwest retreat.

Carriage Suite

The carriage suite, with its tongue-and-groove woodwork, carriage house memorabilia and bright Jacuzzi alcove offers a fun retreat for both couples and families. Original items from the "horse and buggy" days of the estate provide a nostalgic backdrop for the 8 ft. curved iron queen canopy bed.

A unique combination of rustic and elegant -- high ceilings, glowing "old growth forest" fir woodwork and one-of-a-kind antiques work together to create a secluded lodge atmosphere. You'd never believe that downtown Tacoma is just outside your door.

The bedroom area is very spacious - the space was originally designed to store the carriages of the estate (the carriage door, with its ancient sliding track is still intact). The bedroom includes a sitting area with wicker chairs and ottoman, luxurious vintage era Persian rug, CTV/VCR and an 8 ft. canopy bed w/velvet and tapestry renaissance bedding.

Need extra sleeping space? No problem! A massive antique "armoire" with large oval mirror is actually a Victorian Era Murphy bed, providing very comfortable sleeping accommodations for 1-2 guests (makes into a double bed). The 200 year old carved chest holds extra blankets and pillows.

Adjacent to the bedroom, the horse stall has been transformed into a private double Jacuzzi retreat, with bright, filtered light and tropical green foliage. The haychute has been refitted to accomodate a rainshower for two. The suite also has its own water closet (bathroom), separate from the Jacuzzi and shower area.

Lots of character, space and privacy, the Carriage Suite is a favorite getaway for many couples.

Hayloft Suite

For a private cozy retreat, you might want to consider the Hayloft Suite, which encompasses the entire 2nd floor of the carriage house. The hayloft has always captured the hearts and imaginations of both children and adults -- a place to play and hide -- and dream -- where time was forgotten and your only confidants were the horses below.

Although the steep ladder was long ago replaced with a private stairwell entrance, and a few luxuries - such as the clawfoot tub and cane bed - have been added, the hayloft has retained much of its early charm and solitude.

Once the carriage master's private quarters, the bedroom has a curved antique queen carved oak and cane bed from France (very romantic), CTV/VCR, writing desk and a large walk-in closet. Windows overlook the garden and offer a small view of the bay through the trees.

Originally the hayloft, the bright sitting room includes a wonderful lounging chair-for-two and oversized ottoman. With sunlight streaming through the leaded glass window and Commencement Bay shimmering in the distance, it's a perfect place to retreat with a good book or sketchpad.

Caution: Schedules/plans may prove difficult, once you settle into this ultra "lounge magnet"... (kind of like those auto mirror warnings, only things are "farther away" than they appear).

The suite includes a private bath with clawfoot soaking tub & shower, tongue-and-groove woodwork and extra-plush forest green carpet throughout. A stained glass window lights up the bath during the day and night (the photo at right was taken late into the night).

A twin deluxe inner-springs rollaway is also available for a third guest.

Please note: the hayloft has lower ceilings than the other suites (7 ft. - not generally a problem, but very tall - 6'4 and above - guests would probably prefer the suites with the 9 ft. ceilings).
